Are ‘invalided out’, and retirement due to ill health the same thing? Certainly being ‘invalided out’ is not an experience anyone would what. It was a stark experience for Mike Penn.

And So I Write
And so I write,
Instead of fight,
And fright
Comes
Almost
Later.

I
As
One
Form
Sees only
What I
Want
To
See.

And
Then
Leave.

(Micheal Penn)
(On leaving the service invalided out 1984)
